A documentary crew interviews the man responsible for taking care of the last surviving goldfish on Earth.
"Endling," directed by Kelly Yu, is a poignant short film that delves into themes of mortality and human connection through an absurdist lens. Presented in a fictional documentary style, the narrative follows Richard Chen, portrayed by Dennis Dun, who is entrusted with the care of Pao Pao—the last surviving goldfish on Earth.
The film opens with an animated sequence that introduces the legend of the goldfish's origin, setting a whimsical yet profound tone for the story. Fifth Atrium was honored to collaborate on this Oscar-qualifying project by designing and animating the title sequence. Our goal was to encapsulate the film's blend of humor and depth, creating an engaging entry point for the audience.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese art and folklore, we crafted visuals that pay homage to the cultural roots of the narrative. The animation employs a hand-drawn aesthetic, with fluid transitions that mirror the film's exploration of life's impermanence. Color palettes were carefully selected to evoke both nostalgia and whimsy, aligning with the film's emotional landscape.
Collaborating closely with Kelly Yu, we ensured that the animated sequence seamlessly integrated with the film's live-action footage. This cohesion was vital in maintaining the narrative's flow and preserving the authenticity of the story being told.
"Endling" had its World Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2024 and has garnered critical acclaim for its unique storytelling and heartfelt performances. Reviews highlight its ability to balance satire with genuine emotion, creating a narrative that resonates on multiple levels.
